MV FeBrina Escorted Photography Trip September 2026

MV FeBrina Escorted Photography Trip

2-13 October 2026
11-night itinerary to Kimbe Bay, the Witu Islands, and New Hanover. THE BEST diving itinerary in Papua New Guinea.
Only 9 spots on board.
Six berths in three twin/double cabins $5240 per person
Two small single occupancy cabins $5240 per person
Two large single occupancy cabins $6240 per person New Hanover & Witus Itinerary | Diving Kimbe Bay, Witu Islands and New Hanover
Walindi | Kavieng
11 nights | 9.5 dive days
Why this trip?
Simply because it is the best reef diving you will probably ever do. I dive around the world every year running escorted dive trips and checking out suppliers and writing and shooting for dive mags. I've been visiting here since 2011, and can safely say you will not find more variety, more abundance, and so few divers (none) anywhere on this planet. 75% of the world's hard coral species are found here, thousands of described fish and invertebrate species call this part of the world home, as do more that are yet to be described, as well as a few mega-rarities like Coleman's pygmy seahorse. The corals are in amazing condition, and the abundance of pelagic fish like horse-eye jacks and pickhandle barracuda is phenomenal.
Photography coaching
Provided by Best of PNG's founder and underwater photographer Christopher Bartlett. Christopher’s work has been published round the world, and over the last decade he has had more than 100 articles published on a range of diving and marine conservation subjects, and to date has a dozen dive magazine cover shots to his name. Most of the images on this website are his. Some images can be found here. Using simple terms and clear examples, he will cover the basics to advanced lighting techniques for macro and wide-angle photography, from setting up your gear to processing images in Lightroom.
THE DIVING
Signature Itinerary to Kimbe Bay reefs, Witu Islands and Fathers Reefs.
New Hanover & Witus Itinerary includes diving in Kimbe Bay, Witu Islands and New Hanover area.

Kimbe Bay
is home to stunning reefs with those brilliant coral formations you see in all the classic Walindi pics. Beautiful and dramatic sea mounts, coral-laden walls and lush coral gardens are all a feature of Kimbe Bay diving, along with myriad fish and invertebrate life the reefs sustain. Some sites have the biggest gorgonian fans you will ever see. Amongst the 40-odd reef dive sites here, there is also a beautifully preserved WW2 Mitsubishi Zero fighter plane.

Witu Islands are a group of islands, volcanic in origin, situated to the north west of Kimbe Bay. The diving is a mixture of sea mounts rising from deep waters to within metres of the surface (such as Lama shoals), beautiful coral arches and great night dives in the black sand bays of the islands. Krackafat Reef has the biggest school of jacks I have seen anywhere in the world. Barracuda abound, grey and white tip reef sharks roam. And there is lots of interaction with the locals trading fresh fruit and veg out of their canoes and we'll have a trip ashore to visit a village too.

Reefs in the New Hanover area feature a large and diverse variety of marine life with a good mix of stunning underwater vistas to satisfy the wideangle photographer as well as lots of little critters, perfect for the macro enthusiast. The diving features coral gardens, bommies and wall dives in the passages. The channels are fantastic for drift diving with large schools of fish, rays and shark patrolling the lush coral laden sides of the passages, and the reef at Chapman's point at the tip of New Hanover is pelagic fish soup. Near Tunning Island lies the shallow wreck of the Japanese Sanko Maru, sunk by B25s in 1944 and now festooned with corals, and a three-man Japanese minisub.  On the way to Kavieng, we can also dive a Japanese Kate single-engined bomber in 12 metres (40 feet) of clear water.

The dive guides have been with the FeBrina for many years and they know the dive sites extremely well. They have amazing eyes and can point out many creatures that might not normally be seen. You can give them a wishlist of critter and they will do a remarkable job in finding a lot of them for you.
Getting There
Getting to Walindi Resort and MV FeBrina requires a one-hour flight from Port Moresby to Hoskins airport, West New Britain. Looking out the window on your flight you will realise that this is going to be no ordinary holiday. Mountain ranges that top 14,000 feet divide the main island of New Britain. The deeper valleys remained isolated until early last century;  the land you fly over is occupied by people who have 800 different languages and cultures that are just as diverse.

Departure Details
MV FeBrina will depart from Walindi Wharf at approximately 6:00pm on Friday 2nd October, 2026. The closest airport to the departure point is Hoskins airport and there are daily flights with Air Niugini and PNG Air from Port Moresby to Hoskins.
For guests arriving into Hoskins airport 2nd October, flights will be met by the Walindi Resort shuttle bus and guests transferred to FeBrina at the Walindi Wharf. The drive from Hoskins airport to Walindi is approximately 50 minutes.
For guests transferring from Walindi Resort, boarding is from 4:00pm. Luggage will be collected from the resort by FeBrina crew during the day. Guests are welcome to use the Walindi Main House facilities after check out from the resort and while waiting for boarding time. Diving begins first thing 3rd October 2026.

Disembarkation Details
Diving finishes before lunch time on Monday 12th October 2026 and MV FeBrina comes into Kavieng in the afternoon. The crew wash and dry all dive gear. FeBrina will tie up at Kavieng overnight, guests remain accommodated on board. You can fly back to Port Morsby from Kavieng on the morning of the 13th, or join a 3 or 4-night extension to Lissenung Island Resort.

We will book your domestic flights for you, they will be around $490 USD return.
"The coral reefs of Kimbe Bay take me back forty years, to a time when corals grew in lush profusion, untroubled by the problems that beset them today. A short boat ride from Walindi Resort and I am diving on reefs that have half the coral species of the world, all awaiting those rare photo opportunities that come only with the clearest water. I am hard pressed to think of anywhere on earth that has this combination of vibrant health, diversity and beauty."
- Prof Charles Veron
Professor J.E.N. "Charlie" Veron is former Chief Scientist of the Australian Institute of Marine Science.  He is the author of the three-volume series 'Corals of the World'.
Professor Veron was invited to deliver the keynote address on corals at the 2008 Climate Change Conference in Bali, Indonesia.

Extensions
Being PNG experts, we can arrange pre or post-liveaboard extensions around the country. It's a good idea to get to Walindi a few days early to get in some extra dives in Kimbe Bay, as there are over 40 dives sites in the bay alone, to tune in, and to get over jetlag.

Straight after the liveaboard, you could extend and spend 4 nights on the lovely Lissenung island, to dive the best sites of New Ireland Province.
