Dive Itinerary The Best of PNG Milne Bay to Rabaul Itinerary includes diving in the Milne Bay area, Tufi - Normansby Island and Goodenough Island area and along the Southern Coastline of New Britain (including Lindenhaven).

South Coast New Britain diving is a wonderland of rare and unusual critters. Most of the diving is on fringing reefs and lagoons.

Around the Lindenhaven area, the contours of the Solomon Trench (the third deepest part of the world’s oceans) come in very close. In Captain Alan’s opinion, this is the reason that we get so many extraordinary critters in this area, some of which we can’t find in any resource books. Critters that are regularly seen on the Lindenhaven dives are mimic octopus, frogfish, many varieties of ghost pipefish, jawfish, cuttlefish, arrow crabs, orangutan crabs, leaf scorpion fish, rockmover wrasse, pipefish, anemonefish, holothurians, banded shrimp, lionfish, scorpion fish, crocodile fish, soft coral crabs, flying gurnards, nudibranchs of every description, bubble shells, cowry shells, garden eels, flatworms, Spanish dancer and much more. Some years we get Rhinopias aphanes (Lacy scorpionfish). We have had sightings of the very rare juvenile African Pompano, and the beautiful pink Rhinopias frondosa (weedy scorpionfish

We dived four virgin sites around Normansby and Goodenough Islands, discovering more Lacy sorpionfish, Severn's, Pohontoh's, Bargibant's and Denise's pygmy seahorses.

The Tufi area boasts a generous mix of critters and pelagics, with great macro as well as wide-angle photography opportunities. Schooling barracuda, trevally, reef sharks, and the occasional scalloped hammerheads and manta circle the reefs and bommies of the area. Brightly coloured nudibranch, mandarinfish, gobie and ghost pipefish can be found between the hard and soft coral reef walls along with countless other species of fish and critters.

Approximately 1 day’s diving in this area is included.

The Milne Bay area will again excite lovers of both pelagic fish as well as the smaller reef dwellers. Manta rays are reasonaly common as well as hammerhead sharks and barracuda. Critters in this area can include Ghost pipefish, Spanish dancers, Epaulette walking sharks, mantis shrimps, frogfish, juvenile batfish, mimic octopus, Dwarf lionfish… the list goes on and on.

MV FeBrina will depart from Milne Bay at approximately 6:00pm on 24th  March, 2017. The closest airport to the departure point is Gurney Airport (Alotau) and there are daily flights with Air Niugini and Airlines of PNG from Port Moresby to Alotau.

We highly recommend arriving in Port Moresby a day early to allow for flight or luggage delays. Once the FeBrina leaves Alotau, it is too far to come back to pick up delayed luggage/guests. We can arrange accommodation for you.

For guests arriving into Gurney airport on 24th March, flights will be met by the FeBrina crew/transfer bus. For afternoon arrivals, guests will be transferred to the Febrina wherever she is anchored in Milne Bay (depends on the prevailing winds). If arrival flight is in the morning and the crew are still preparing the boat for charter, guests will be transferred to Alotau International Hotel to await boarding. Please note comments above regarding possible flight or luggage delays.

For guests transferring from accommodation in Alotau on 24th March, boarding is from 4:00pm. FeBrina crew will be in touch with your hotel during the day to arrange transfer to the Febrina.

Diving begins first thing Saturday 25th March 2017.

Disembarkation Details: Diving finishes before lunch time on April 5th and MV FeBrina boat anchors in Rabaul Harbour in the afternoon and the crew will wash and dry all dive gear. Guests have the option of doing a sight seeing tour of Rabaul in the afternoon if they wish (at their own expense) and crew will assist in organizing this. FeBrina will anchor up in Rabaul Harbour overnight on April 4th and guests remain accommodated on board.

Disembarkation is prior to 9:00am on the morning of 5th Aprilat Rabaul. Airport transfers will be arranged to meet outgoing flights from Rabaul (Tokua) airport. For those with early morning flight, early continental breakfast is provided prior to early transfer. Guests with later departures during the day will be transferred to Rapopo Plantation resort after breakfast until it is time for airport transfer.

We can also arrange extensions and tours around Rabaul to the underground Japanese hospital and barge tunnels, the Orchid Park, War Museum, Yamamoto’s tunnel, Bitapaka War Cemetery, hot springs, the Submarine base, full day trips to the Duke of York Islands, camping trips to the Duke of York or Talele Islands, and volcano hikes.

We will be ruuning an escorted extension with 2 nights in East New Britain and 4 nights in the Sepik region.
